I think it’s kind of a shame that softball will be removed – I never watched it, but having played baseball and a little slow-pitch softball afterward, I know what kind of work it takes and how long and hard they’ve played to get to that level of competition.  Having said that though, these women can take comfort in the fact that they join an oftentimes obscure group of cancelled events in the dust bin of olympic history.  The following is as comprehensive a list as I could muster (thanks DatabaseOlympics.com):
